Remote Monitoring: A Reliability Factor

In the field of technical security, the use of video monitoring systems as an additional security tool is becoming more prevalent. In this case, the focus is on replacing physical security with remote video monitoring. The concept of video monitoring is evolving in its functionality, where video operators are now tasked with analyzing video streams based on discrete events. This analysis is often referred to as video analytics, where cameras or recorders generate discrete events through video analysis, and operators must analyze these events. Events can include motion detection in a predefined area or identification of a specific license plate through programmed search algorithms. These discrete events can be generated by both humans and security systems.

The advantage of a physically present person on the premises is undeniable. They are PRESENT!

Ensuring remote presence is achieved through access via commercial networks. Despite the efforts of commercial networks to provide uninterrupted service, outages still occur. To truly maintain presence on the premises regardless of connectivity, the following solutions are implemented:

  • The primary communication channel for video streaming is the local network of our enterprise, which does not rely on commercial traffic in any of its nodes. Even if internet connectivity fails in the city, our network will continue to operate.
  • Commercial internet networks are used as a secondary option to facilitate preventive maintenance on components of the local network and in case of failure of individual nodes.
  • Power backup for video cameras and local network components is designed to last at least 4-5 hours without an external power source. The dispatch center itself is powered by two independent feeders through an automatic voltage regulator (AVR), and in the event of a prolonged outage, a backup generator is available. Solar panels and a wind generator are currently being designed and installed for further energy independence.

Thus, the architecture of the remote PRESENCE we are building on the premises is designed to be more reliable than the physically present security guard.
